She collaborated with her daughter to write many episodes of her Arabel and Mortimer the raven series for the BBC. She has received awards for children's fiction and for mystery fiction, and has also written ''sequels'' to Jane Austen books. Her first children's novel, The Kingdom and the Cave, was published in 1960. Joan had a variety of jobs, including working for the BBC, the United Nations Information Centre and then as features editor for a short story magazine. Aiken is best known for her adult "fantasy" stories. Joan Delano Aiken (1924-2004) was the daughter of the American poet, Conrad Aiken.
