In a preface to the 1853 first edition, Dickens claimed there were many actual precedents for his fictional case. At the centre of Bleak House is a long-running legal case in the Court of Chancery, Jarndyce and Jarndyce, which came about because a testator wrote several conflicting wills. Dickens wrote his ninth novel Bleak House at that perfect hinge in his career when he was finally able to channel his creative exuberance into a sustained and sophisticated piece of narrative art. ![]() Despite his lack of formal education, he became the most popular novelist of his time and remains one of the best-known English authors. Charles John Huffam Dickens, an English writer and social critic, was born in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. ![]()

The book is fast-paced and well-constructed. I found some graphic scenes hard to read as they lingered in my imagination more than the TV shows and were nightmare-inducing. It addresses deviant sexual thoughts and actions (especially pedophilia), infertility, child abduction and trafficking, abortion, blackmail, cruelty, torture and murder. There are many gut-wrenching and cringe-worthy issues in The Calling. I missed Luther when the series ended in 2019, but now a recent movie, 'The Fallen Sun' on Netflix continues Luther's life and his criminal cases after the series' final episode and news that more movies will follow. The killers are so deranged, and their crimes revolting, I admit to cheering him on. He is an angry man who is compelled to bring some of the evilest, demented killers to his type of justice (or vengeance), often going outside the law. He is my favourite TV homicide detective, so I am probably biased. ![]() The calling is a book that was written as a prequel to the five brilliant BBC TV series that ran from 2010 to 2019. ![]() ![]() But when your kids bite into the resulting cookies, they usually end up crinkling their noses and saying, “Why did you mess with it? We liked the cookies better the old way!”Īctually, we have three yoked stories here of lost-and-found, though the Lectionary skips over the first two. This parable is like your Grandma’s classic recipe for chocolate chip cookies: at some point you might try to tweak the recipe to freshen it up a bit-white chocolate chips might be fun, maybe some cinnamon. And just maybe you shouldn’t mess with it. ![]() ![]() You could even do what one well-known writer once suggested which was, in a way, to tell it from the fatted calf’s point of view!īut when it’s all said and done, we’ve still got the same basic story that Jesus told to make a very basic gospel point. Some have tried to be fresh and novel by preaching the story from the father’s point of view, from the older brother’s point of view, from the pigs’ point of view (OK, I never actually heard one from that point of view but it’s surely just a matter of time!). Thus when it comes to the Parable of the Prodigal Son, folks have tried to preach it backwards, sideways from above, from below. ![]() “Goodness, people have heard this story SOOOO many times” we think.
